Call for Papers

The third annual International Deleuze Studies Conference will explore how the three creative domains of thought – art, science and philosophy – connect, continue and create together.

The visionary quality of the profoundly generous and complex philosophy of Gilles Deleuze may provide new and productive ways of understanding connections, in a world that is increasingly globally linked and technologically mediated.

Central questions addressed at the conference are: in what ways do disciplines meet and interfere with one another?  What kind of methodological and political implications do their dynamic encounters entail?  What are the limits of transdisciplinary connections, relations and fields?

What is Philosophy after Deleuze?

What is Philosophy after Deleuze?

Postgraduate Conference

University of Dundee
11-12th April 2008

Key Speakers:

Professor James Williams (Dundee)
Dr Ray Brassier (Middlesex)

This conference will follow two strands; both departing from the presupposition that Deleuze’s work has become an orthodox point of reference for contemporary philosophy. The first strand will look for papers that, though sympathetic to Deleuze, move beyond exegesis and engage critically with his work. The second strand will posit the emergence of questions that exceed both the remits and capacities of Deleuze’s philosophy. Themes we hope to explore include:

• What can an application of Deleuzian philosophy actually achieve
• The status of ethico-political questions for philosophy in the wake of Deleuze
• A balanced assessment of Deleuze’s other worldly, or ascetic, character
• The role of the event, subjectivity and freedom in contemporary philosophy
• The fetish for novelty as the predominant criterion of significant thought
• The ontological status of difference for philosophy
• The structuring of situations and the logic of appearance

We are interested in the emergence of a post-Deleuzian philosophical climate. Figures we take to contribute to this climate include: Badiou, Laruelle, Rancière, Agamben, Žižek, Peter Hallward, Quentin Meillassoux. We seek papers that develop the understanding of these themes and figures at the forefront of contemporary philosophy.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words to be submitted by 31 January 2008. Speakers will receive 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts to be submitted to Brian Smith: b.a.smith@dundee.ac.uk

CALL FOR PAPERS

The incredible body of research on Deleuze’s work that has emerged in the past two decades – well over 130 books and literally thousands of articles – has created a situation in which it is no longer possible for a lone scholar to keep pace with new developments in the field. As scholars in disciplines as far flung from each other as musicology, organisational studies, philosophy and cultural studies embrace Deleuze this problem grows ever more intractable.

Compounding matters further, Deleuze scholarship spans most languages. In the process there has appeared a highly contested variety of Deleuzes – there is the political Deleuze, the apolitical Deleuze, the philosophical Deleuze (who is a Kantian, a Nietzschean, a Spinozist, a Stoic, etc.), the phenomenological Deleuze, the activist Deleuze, and so on. Sponsored by the journal Deleuze Studies, the aim of this conference is to bring all these Deleuzes into communication.

Participants include:
Hanjo Berressem
Ronald Bogue
Claire Colebrook
Gary Genosko
Eugene Holland
Dorothea Olkowski
John Protevi
James Williams

Convened by Ian Buchanan
Tim Matts and Aidan Tynan
